VABA Winter League Practices Underway!

The VABA winter basketball league practices are underway! Last week, VABA Coaches completed their training and took the court with their teams to begin teaching, leading, motivating...COACHING! This winter VABA is running four separate leagues, the JBL (grades 1-2), JBL (grades 3-4), the VDBL and the VDBL-Girls league and totaling almost 60 youth teams! The community is buzzing, and we are looking forward to tipping off the season on the weekend of Decembe 3rd - 4th (schedules will be posted soon). One of VABA's favorite quotes is: Failing to prepare is preparing to fail (John Wooden). Over the past eight weeks, the gym has been packed on Sunday afternoons for weekly skills academy sessions. Coach House, Coach D'Alessandro and a number of other coaches worked hard to develop important skills to help prepare local young athletes, from grades 2 - 12, for the upcoming season! Great job to those that dedicated so much time, and best of luck to you in the upcoming season!

VABA Skills Academies are set up based on your summer schedule. Starting each day at 12:00 noon and running to 3:00 pm, you can choose to come once, twice or three times per week. The competition will be held Sunday, January 23, at 5:00 PM at Charlottesville Catholic School gym located at 1205 Pen Park Road, C'ville. Registration forms will be available at the event. We apologize for the change and the inconvenience, but due to some extenuating circumstances we have had to make some changes to much of the 7th & 8th grade schedules (6th grade schedules have also had some changes as well). Great American Basketball Marrowthon THIS weekend!

The Basketball Marrowthon is our biggest fundraiser and community service project of the year! This event is carried out by the Virginia Basketball Academy to benefit transplant and bone marrow research. Our purpose is to raise funds and awareness, as well as increase the donor registry, all to benefit bone marrow sesearch & transplants around the world!

It’s simple. You play basketball as long as you can…and find people to pay for each hour that you play (or make a flat donation). Our annual Marrowthon is a fun and fit activity for the VDBL (a.k.a. “D” League) that helps support a wonderful cause. There will be up to 12 hours of basketball available to all players (1:00 – 7:00 pm on Saturday, November 6^th & Sunday, November 7^th). Your hours will count for the time you’re on the court. Whether it is 60-minute scrimmages, 30-minute clinics, Skills Challenges, 3-point Contests or 1-on-1 Challenges with UVA Players, VDBL participants set realistic goals based on age and development. Each player will receive a certificate of participation.And, the best news is…you could SAVE A LIFE! How? Read on! All adults, eighteen years and older, are encouraged to join the registry for bone marrow tissue typing…and possibly save a life. It’s easy to join! There are no needles or invasive procedures. To join the registry, the technology has been vastly simplified in recent years, so there is no reason not to join! You simply stop by a “Donor Booth” at the Basketball Marrowthon and get your cheek swabbed – that’s it! Then, you will be placed on the registry for a patient desperately in need of a match. Be sure to stop by and learn more, join, invite your friends to come by…or volunteer if you’d like to man a booth! VABA will make a contribution for everyone that joins towards the laboratory testing cost.

Fall Skills Academy goes into its third week

Every Saturday morning dozens of local basketball players gather at specified times to work on their skills as they prepare for the upcoming season. Ball-handling, shooting and team fundamentals are the emphasis along with the expectation that each participant finds time to continue working on their skills. No stone is left unturned! The inaugural year of the VDBL Girls League is upon us! Tonight, we are having another round of evaluations for all those ladies who would, one day, be attending Albemarle HS ("Patriots") and Monticello HS ("Mustangs"). Last Sunday, September 12th, VABA tipped off its VDBL season with its first of three tryouts. This First Chance "Open" tryout was well attended by over a hundred eager, focused young basketball players! For those who were assigned to a team roster, congratulations to the start of a wonderful basketball experience this winter! Last night we held ANOTHER tryout - which was also very well-attended. TOMORROW, we will be having our final round of tryouts (Wednesday @ Monticello HS, 7:00 - 9:00 pm). Trying out for a team is never easy, and we sincerely appreciate the effort put forth by those young athletes giving it their all!
